Yes, the best way to get vitamin C is from the original source- fruits and vegetables such as cantaloup, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, and kale. In today’s world, we sit down to nutritious meals rarely considering what life would be like if these were not available.
Yet centuries ago, sailors knew all too well what would happen. They experienced swollen and bleeding gums, loose teeth, hemorrhaging under the skin and slow would healing. This reaction of the body is known as scurvy. Death could and did follow. It was established that the lack of citrus had severe adverse effects on the health of the body.
Scottish surgeon James Lind conducted trails in 1747 showing that citrus fruits cured the disease. Centuries later, scientists identified and isolated the specific compound responsible: ascorbic acid.
It was not until the 1920’s, researcher Albert Szent-Gyorgyi from Budapest began his work in the chemical ascorbic acid that enables the body to use carbohydrates, fats, and proteins effectively that the connection to the value He received the Noble Prize in 1937 for the discovery of Hexuronic acid, which is what vitamin C was initially called. He discovered the value of vitamin C for its ability to combat oxidative stress as well as its role in collagen synthesis, a vital component of skin structure and elasticity.
Then, in 1932 Walter Haworth determined the molecular structure of hexuronic acid and renamed it ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
The quest to stabilize vit C for topical use would come much later when Sheldon Pinnel, a dermatologist considered the Father of Topical Antioxidants, patented a stable form of vitamin C, and established specific formulations to topical use.
Flash forward to the early 1990’s and the development of stabilized vit C. Initial studies on would healing began along with photodamage on the skin. This led to the patented system that allowed for successful absorption in the skin. A new era of skincare was born!
Benefits
Consider all the fabulous things vitamin C does for the skin. It supports collagen production and protects against damage. As an antioxidant, vitamin C neutralizes free radicals (like air pollution and UV damage from the sun) that are harmful to the skin.
Reducing redness and inflammation is also a characteristic of vitamin C. In that space, it can help with acne scarring.
Vitamin C inhibits the enzyme called tyrosinase, which plays a role in melanin production. So, with regular use, vitamin C can fade hyperpigmentation for sun exposure.
Known as the Dynamic Duo, vitamin C, and retinol are like the salt and pepper shakers of the skincare world. Applied in the morning, vitamin C (think sunshine and orange juice) acts to strengthen and protect the skin. Add a hydrator and SPF to complete the process. The other, retinol, in the evening when collagen production is at its busiest. This combination has long been recognized as the classic combination to build firmer, stronger, and brighter skin.
Triple Threat
Vitamin C is often combined with vitamin E and ferulic acid. The combination proves itself as a highly stable and potent serum that is a much stronger defense against environmental aggressors.
Application
Use vitamin C in the morning just after cleansing. Follow with your favorite moisturizer and SPF. Over several weeks you will notice a smoother, clearer face with improved elasticity. Vitamin C comes in concentrations ranging from ten to twenty percent. If your skin is dry or sensitive, using a lower percentage is suggested.
NOTE: Anyone can use topical vitamin C, including pregnant woman. If you are concerned, conduct a patch test on the inside of the elbow or behind the ear to evaluate sensitivity. Start by applying vitamin C serum every other day to acclimate your skin. If you are using Benzoyl peroxide products for acne, avoid using it at the same time as vitamin C, as benzoyl peroxide can cancel out the benefits of vitamin C. In addition, stop using any vitamin C topicals 48 to 72 hours prior to any microneedling, chemical peels or laser treatments. You may resume using it daily according to your provider’s recommendations.
Within a matter of months of regular use, you should see added brightness and feel a noticeable smoothness in your skin.
