How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last

Most hyaluronic acid dermal fillers last somewhere between six months and two years, and the single biggest factor is not the brand, it is where on your face it went.

Lips move constantly and break filler down fastest.

Cheeks and the jawline sit relatively still and hold much longer. Product thickness, how much was placed, and your own metabolism all shift the number from there.

Here is the realistic breakdown, area by area, so you can plan your maintenance instead of being surprised by it.

By treatment area

Lips: six to twelve months. The shortest of any area, and it frustrates people who were quoted "a year" in general terms. Your lips are in motion all day, talking, eating, and drinking, and that mechanical movement clears filler faster. Thin, soft products get used in lips for a natural feel, which also means less material to work with. Most lip patients settle into touch-ups every six to nine months.

Under the eyes (tear troughs): nine to eighteen months. Delicate area, thin product, and small volumes. Duration varies more here than anywhere else, and this is the area where injector experience matters most because the anatomy is unforgiving.

Cheeks and midface: twelve to twenty-four months. The long end. Thicker, more structural products go here, in larger volumes, into an area that does not move much. Cheek filler is often the best value per dollar for exactly that reason.

Nasolabial folds (nose to mouth corners): nine to fifteen months. Moderate movement from smiling and talking puts this in the middle.

Chin and jawline: twelve to twenty-four months. Firm structural product, minimal movement, long duration.

Nose (non-surgical rhinoplasty): twelve to eighteen months. Small volume, very little movement.

Hands: twelve to eighteen months. Often overlooked and it holds reasonably well.

What changes your personal number

Your metabolism. Faster metabolisms break filler down faster. This is largely out of your control, and it is why two people can get identical treatments on the same day and be on different touch-up schedules a year later.

How much exercise you do. Consistent, heavy cardio is associated with faster breakdown. It is not a reason to stop training. It is a reason not to be surprised.

Which product was used. Thin, soft gels for delicate areas dissolve sooner. Thicker, more cross-linked gels for structure last longer. That is a deliberate tradeoff your injector made for the result you wanted, not a shortcut.

How much went in. Underfilled areas look done sooner because there was less to lose in the first place.

Sun exposure and smoking. Both accelerate breakdown, and both age the surrounding skin at the same time.

Where you are starting from. First-time filler patients often feel like the second round lasts longer. Part of that is having a better baseline to maintain.

Not all fillers work the same way

Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume the moment they go in, and your body gradually breaks them down. That is the common category and everything above refers to it. They also have a real advantage: they can be dissolved with an enzyme if you dislike the result or something needs correcting. That is a genuine safety net.

Biostimulator injections work on a different principle. Instead of filling a space, they prompt your own body to produce collagen over the following months. Results build gradually rather than appearing immediately, they typically last longer, often two years or more, and they are usually done as a series. The tradeoff is patience and the fact that they cannot be reversed the way hyaluronic acid can. For someone losing overall facial volume rather than wanting one feature enhanced, they are often the better fit.

Fading is not all or nothing

Filler does not vanish on a date. It softens gradually, which is why so many people say they cannot tell when it wore off.

That gradual fade is actually useful. Coming in for a smaller top-up before it is fully gone keeps you looking consistent and usually costs less than rebuilding from scratch. The people whose results look most natural over years are almost always the ones on a steady maintenance rhythm rather than the ones who let everything disappear and start over.

Filler is not the answer to everything

If your concern is a line that only appears when you move, that is a muscle problem and neurotoxin is the right tool. Our post on Botox vs Dysport vs Xeomin covers that side, and plenty of treatment plans use both for different problems.

If your concern is texture, tone, or sun damage, filler will not touch it. And if you want subtle lip definition without added volume, a lip flip uses a small amount of neurotoxin instead of filler and is worth asking about.

How we plan it

At an aesthetic consult we look at what is actually causing the concern, which is not always the thing patients point at. A tired-looking under-eye is often a midface volume issue, and treating the cheek can improve the eye without putting anything under it.

Then we pick products for the area, place conservatively, and bring you back to assess before adding more. We would rather build over two visits than overfill in one, and we will tell you when the honest answer is that filler is not what you need. Our approach is customized to your face and how it moves, drawn from experience across the different products rather than a set template.

Frequently asked questions

How long does lip filler last? Usually six to twelve months, the shortest of any area. Lips move constantly and that breaks filler down faster. Most lip patients come back every six to nine months.

Can dermal fillers be removed? Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks them down within a day or two. Biostimulators cannot be reversed that way, which is worth knowing before you choose between them.

Does filler stretch out my skin over time? Reasonable, appropriately dosed filler does not. Repeated overfilling can distort tissue, which is a good argument for a conservative injector and gradual building rather than a dramatic single session.

Is it better to wait until it is completely gone? No, and this is the most common maintenance mistake. Topping up while some filler remains keeps your look consistent and usually needs less product than starting over.

Will one syringe be enough? Sometimes, for one small area. Cheeks, jawline, and full-face volume loss usually need more, and we will tell you honestly at the consult rather than stretching one syringe across a face that needs three

How soon will I look normal after treatment? Some swelling and occasional bruising is normal for the first few days, more in the lips than anywhere else. Most people are presentable the next day and settled by two weeks. Do not book filler three days before a wedding.
